Petzinger Named NWCA Wrestler of the Month

Jan. 5, 2022 - North Central College women's wrestler Sydney Petzinger was named National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) December Northwest Region Wrestler of the Month this afternoon. 

Petzinger, a Freshman from Parsippany, N.J, posted a 7-1 record in December and was 2-1 against ranked opponents with one pin and four technical falls.  She defeated Natalie Reyna of McKendree University by a 7-4 decision at the North Central College Women's Open. Reyna placed third at the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling (NCWW) Championships last season. Petzinger also defeated Olivia Shore of Tiffin University 11-0 at the Desert Duals. Shore is the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the 101-pound weight class and previously held an 11-0 record before moving up to 109-pounds to face Petzinger. 

Petzinger took down Valeriia Mamleeva of Lindenwood at the North Central College Women's Open. Mamleeva was an All-American at the NCWW Championships last season. Her only loss of the month came against Cadet and Junior World Champion, Emily Shilson of Augsburg University in the finals of the North Central College Women's Open. 

Zoe Nowicki of Adrian College was named Northeast Region Wrestler of the Month, Ana Luciano of King University earned Southeast Region honors and Claire Dicugno of Colorado Mesa earned Southwest Region honors. All four women are eligible for the NWCA National Wrestler of the Month that will be announced next tuesday, Jan 11. 

Petzinger and the Cardinals are back in action tomorrow as they travel to Louisville, Ky to compete in the NWCA National Duals. The matches are set to begin at 9:00 am inside the Kentucky International Convention Center.
