Women’s Wrestling Third at NWCA National Duals

Louisville, Ky. (Jan. 7, 2022) - Taking a trip to Louisville, Ky, the North Central College women's wrestling team took home third place in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals after taking down three ranked opponents inside the Kentucky International Convention Center. 

The Cardinals started day one facing off against Lindenwood University in pool play. Kate Cacho would get the Cardinals on the board after securing a Forfeit win in the 101-pound weight class. Sydney Petzinger would defeat opponent Valeriia Mamleeva by a 10-0 technical fall in the 109-pound weight class putting the Cardinals up 9-0. Mateah Roehl would pin opponent Amanda McAleavey in the 116-pound weight class to extend the Cardinal lead to 14. In the 123-pound weight class, Asia Nyguen-Smith would lose 9-8 in a close match against Cayden Condit putting the Cardinals up 15-3. Yele Aycock would pin opponent Jasmine Ward in the 130-pound weight class giving the Cardinals a 20-3 lead. Salome Walker would lose to Athena Willden by a 12-11 decision before Kim Nunez would pin Julianna Moreno, extending the Cardinal lead once again. Tiera Jimerson would face Sara Lake in a 155-pound match and would lose a 10-8 decision. In the 170-pound weight class, Fiona McConnell would pin her opponent to give the Cardinals five more points. Alondra Aguayo would finish off the dual by pinning Kaycee Fitero to give the Cardinals a 37-9 win. 

The Cardinals would take on No. 8 Presbyterian College in the second round. Prestbyterian would take the first match of the dual putting the Cardinals down 5-0. Petzinger would win by a forfeit, forcing a 5-5 tie. Presbyterian would win the 116-pound matchup giving them a 10-5 lead heading into the 123-pound match. Amani Jones, Aycock, Walker and Nunez would all receive wins by forfeit giving the Cardinals a 25-10 lead. Jimerson would bounce back from a round one loss and pin Gabriella Shevlin before Yelena Makoyed would pin Isabella Badon bringing the lead to 35-10. Aguayo would end the dual with a win by forfeit securing the Cardinals a 40-10 win. 

In the last dual meet of the day, the Cardinals would face Adrian College in the third round. Cacho, Petzinger, Kendra Ryan and Nguyen-Smith would all receive wins by forfeit giving the Cardinals a 20-0 lead. Jones would defeat Laila Oribello by a 14-4 technical fall in the 130-pound weight class giving the Cardinals a 24-1 lead. Adrian would win the 136-pound match bringing the score to 24-5. Riley Aamold would pin Nahommi Marmolejo in the 143-pound weight class before Jimerson would pin Nyla Burgess extending the Cardinal lead to 35-5. Makoyed would win her second match of the day as she pinned Aspen Dodge before Aguayo would defeat her opponent by a 12-2 technical fall giving the Cardinals their third win of the Day. 


Heading into day two with a 3-0 record, the Cardinals would take on No. 2 McKendree University in the final dual of pool play. The Cardinals would jump out to an early lead as Cacho would defeat Lizette Rodriguez by a 10-0 technical fall before Petzinger would pin Natalie Reyna giving the Cardinals a 9-0 lead. McKendree would take the 116-pound weight class by a forfeit win but Jones would extend the lead after defeating Caitlyn Throne by an 11-0 technical fall, giving the Cardinals a 13-5 lead. McKendree would win the next four matches putting the Cardinals down 21-13. Makoyed would get the Cardinals back on the board as she defeated Joye Levendusky by an 11-0 technical fall. McKendree would win the 191-pound matchup giving the Cardinals their first loss of the season. 

In the semifinals, the Cardinals would face off against No.1 King University. King would win the first seven matches before Jimerson would pin Tiffani Baublitz giving the Cardinals five more points. The Cardinals would fall 35-10 putting them into the third place match. 

The Cardinals would face No. 7 Tiffin University in the third place match. Tiffin would jump out to an early 3-1 lead after Cacho would fall in a 5-1 decision before Petzinger would win by a forfeit giving the Cardinals a 6-3 lead. Ryan would fall in the 116-pound weight class by a 9-2 decision before Nguyen-Smith would defeat Grace Jones by a 5-0 decision. Jones would defeat Grace Jones 9-5 giving the Cardinals a 13-7 lead. In the 136-pound weight class, Aycock would defeat Michal Buska by a 10-0 technical fall putting the Cardinals up 17-7. Jimerson would finish off the day with a 6-1 decision win over Taylor Hites in the 155-pound weight class before McConnell would defeat Aliya Martin by a 10-0 technical fall putting the Cardinals up 24-10. Moving up to the 191-pound weight class, Makoyed would pin Taryn Martin and give the Cardinals a 30-11 win. 

The Cardinals are back in action Jan. 24 as they travel north to Stevens Point Wis. to take on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Pioneers in a dual meet. The matches are set to start at 5:30 PM inside the Multi Activity Center.
