Oct. 19, 2022Â -Â On a night when its aggressive offense peppered the opposition with shots from start to finish, an errant kick by Millikin University wound up being what swung the outcome in the North Central College women's soccer team Wednesday in a 1-1 tie at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
Millikin's Bailee Becker put the Big Blue (5-5-3, 3-2-1 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) in front after just 7:16 had elapsed in the first half. The 19th-ranked Cardinals (10-1-4, 3-0-3 CCIW) went on the attack soon thereafter, with Sarah Andrey and Lauren Fischer firing off shots in rapid succession. In its haste to clear the ball, Millikin instead directed the ball into its own net, leveling the score at 1-1 with 32:20 still to play in the opening period.
The Cardinals kept up their hot pursuit of a game-winning goal throughout the second half, outshooting the hosts, 21-2, and unleashing three attempts in the final two minutes.
North Central hosts its final home game of the regular season Saturday, taking on Illinois Wesleyan University (8-2-3, 6-0-1) at noon.
