CCIW Bestows Accolades on Cardinals

2022 All-CCIW Men's Soccer Teams

Oct. 28, 2022 - The North Central College men's soccer team has been honored with eight selections to the All-College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) teams while they claimed all four of the conference's major individual awards after hoisting their first CCIW regular-season title since 1994. 

Junior Midfielder Aidan Westerberg was named the recipient of the Student-Athlete of the Year award, making him the first Cardinal to receive this honor since Joe Strojaspal in 1994. Westerberg leads the Cardinals in goals (9) and points (22) this season. During CCIW play, Westerberg had a league high seven goals which helped the Cardinals claim the regular-season title this season. 

Junior Goalkeeper Sid Marquardt was honored as the Defensive Student-Athlete of the Year, he is the first Cardinal in program histroy to recieve this award. Marquardt posted a 13-0-3 record this season, tallying 42 saves and picking up six shutouts while leading the CCIW in goals against average (.867) and shutouts (6). Along with his six shutouts this season, Marquardt is the program leader for career shutouts with 18 shutouts in just his first two seasons. 

For the second consecutive season, the Cardinals were awarded with the Newcomer of the Year as Freshman Forward Matteo Innocenti received the honor. Innocenti ranks second on the Cardinals for goals (6) and assists (4) this season. Innocenti tallied four of his six goals during conference play this season, three of them coming in the Cardinals 4-0 shutout win over Millikin. He leads the CCIW in game winning goals this season with four, his most recent coming in the Cardinals 3-2 win over Carroll University. 

Head coach Enzo Fuschino was named the recipient of the CCIW's Joe Bean Coach of the Year award for the third consecutive season. Fuschino is the only head coach in CCIW history to receive this honor in three straight seasons. Since taking over the program in 2019, Fuschino has led the Cardinals to a 43-7-8 record while claiming a CCIW regular season and CCIW Tournament title as well as making the first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in program history.

Innocenti, Marquardt, Westerberg, Jacopo De Collibus and Edoardo Bonifacio were all selections to the All-CCIW First Team while Jack Fairwood, Daniel Navarro and Eloi Nyibizi received Second Team honors. De Collibus has scored two goals and one assist this season for the Cardinals while Bonifacio has helped anchor the Cardinal defense but has been a threat on the offensive end, scoring four goals and dishing out one assist this season. 

Fairwood has scored three goals this season with three assists while Nyibizi has scored five goals and a team high five assists on the season. Navarro is a part of the dominant Cardinal backline that has only allowed 15 goals this season. He has started on the backline for all 18 games for the Cardinals while scoring one goal this season. 

The 12th ranked Cardinals (14-0-4) will host the CCIW semi finals on Wednesday, Nov. 2 as they are heading into the tournament as the No. 1 seed. They will play the winner of the CCIW Quarterfinal between Carthage College and Elmhurst University at 5:45 inside Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
