KENOSHA, Wis. (Oct. 8, 2022) - The North Central College men's soccer team's two first half goals helped them defeat College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) foe, Carthage College, 3-1 Saturday night inside Art Keller Field.
The Cardinals (10-0-3, 3-0-0 CCIW) looked to remain unbeaten in conference play and keep their unbeaten streak alive and in the second minute, Sam Abreu had an opportunity to put the Cardinals early but his shot went left of the net and out of the play. In the 29th minute, Matteo Innocenti fired a shot on net but Carthage's Tino Korhonen was there to shut down his scoring attempt. Just a minute later, Aidan Westerberg would send a strike past Korhonen off a pass from Eloi Nyibizi to put the Cardinals up 1-0. The last 15 minutes of the first half saw little action but as the clock was winding down, Jack Bonavia would finish off a Jack Fairwood pass to send the Cardinals into halftime with a two goal lead.
Carthage came out of the break, looking to cut down the Cardinal lead and just 51 seconds into the half Eli Schoffstall would find an opportunity but he sent his shot over the crossbar, shutting down the Firebirds attack. In the 52nd minute, Bonavia found Jaziel Enriquez who slipped past the Carthage defense, sending a strike past Korhonen to put the Cardinals up 3-0. Carthage would respond in the 61st minute as Schoffstall would finish off a Mickey Reilly pass to cut the Cardinals lead to two. The North Central defense shut down all of Carthage's offensive opportunities late in the second half, giving them a 3-1 win over the Firebirds.
Sid Marquardt tallied one save in the contest as he improved his record to 9-0-2 on the season. The Cardinals (10-0-3, 3-0-0- CCIW) welcome No. 6 North Park University on Wednesday night. The action is set to start at 7:30 pm inside Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
