WAUKESHA, Wis. (Nov. 12, 2022) - Enjoying prolific shooting from the perimeter for a second straight outing, the North Central College men's basketball team improved to 2-0 Saturday with a 77-60 victory over Whitman College (Washington) in the Carroll University Tip-Off Classic.
The Cardinals led nearly the whole way and connected on 10 of 19 three-point shots (52.6 percent) and counting eight steals among their 17 forced turnovers. Leading North Central's effort was Ethan Helwig, who erupted for a career-high 32 points on 11 of 14 shooting and made 7 of 8 three-pointers.
Trailing, 7-5, in the early going, the Cardinals held Whitman (2-1) scoreless for four minutes, during which time they scored 11 straight points to pull in front. Matt Helwig scored seven points during the rally. North Central led by as many as 18 points before heading into halftime with a 45-29 advantage.
The Cardinals scored the first seven points of the second half to take their largest lead of the game at 52-29, then led comfortably until the end.
Matt Helwig finished with 23 points, making 12 of 13 free throws, after scoring 29 in Friday's 81-70 win against the University of Dubuque.
The Cardinals travel to face Aurora University Tuesday at Thornton Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
