LA CROSSE, WIS. (Dec. 3, 2022) - Traveling up north to La Crosse, Wis. for a top-five battle with fifth-ranked Augsburg University, the North Central College women's wrestling team reigned victorious once again as they defeated the Auggies 34-9 inside the LAW Facility.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early 15-0 lead as Amber Turner (101), No. 1 Sydney Petzinger (109) and No. 1 Jaslynn Gallegos (116) all received wins by forfeit. No. 5 Amani Jones kicked off the first true match of the dual at 123-pounds as she pinned Gabby Skidmore, the seventh-ranked wrestler in 123-pounds, to put the Cardinals up 20-0.
In the 130-pound bout, Emma Grimm pinned Ellisa Jimenez in the first period to give the Cardinals a demanding 25-0 lead. Yele Aycock, the No. 1-ranked wrestler in 136-pounds, squared off with No. 2 Nina Makem. The last time these two met, Aycock defeated Makem by a 2-1 decision at the Pointer Open but Makem would get her revenge as she defeated Aycock by an 8-6 decision to cut the Cardinals lead to 22.
The Auggies would win the next two matches as No. 3 Katie Lange would defeat No. 5 Kendall Bostelman by a 6-0 decision in the 143-pound bout and No. 1 Marlynne Deede defeated Tiera Jimerson by a 10-4 decision in the 155-pound match.. The Cardinals held a 25-9 lead heading into the final two matches.
No. 1 Yelena Makoyed continued her dominance on the mat as she defeated No. 4 Ashley Lekas by a 10-0 technical fall to put the Cardinals up 29-9. No. 5 Traeh Haynes would finish the dual by pinning Brooklyn Hays to give the Cardinals a 34-9 win.
The No. 1-ranked Cardinals (10-0) are back in action on Sunday, Dec. 11 as they host the Third annual North Central College Women's Open. The action is set to start at 9 am inside the Residence Hall/Recreation Center.
