Dec. 6, 2022 - Following an impressive start to her senior season,
Yelena Makoyed of the North Central College women's wrestling team was named the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Region Four wrestler of the month.
Makoyed, an Orangevale, Calif. Native, has posted a 15-0 record this season while claiming titles at the Adrian and Pointer Opens. In the Cardinals most recent contest against No. 5 Augsburg, Makoyed pinned Ashley Lekas, the fourth-ranked wrestler in 170-pounds. Makoyed and Lekas squared off in the championship match of the Pointer Open where Makoyed would defeat Lekas by a 10-0 technical fall.
Makoyed, the No. 1-ranked wrestler in 170-pounds and No. 2-ranked pound-for-pound wrestler, took down two other ranked opponents this month as she defeated No. 5 Jade Herzer of UW-Stevens Point by a 13-0 technical fall to take home the Adrian Open title and pinned No. 7 Alexandra Castillo of McKendree University. Makoyed traveled to Austin, Texas for the NWCA All-Star Classic where she defeated No. 7 Jessie Lee of Life University (NAIA) by a 10-0 technical fall.
Lilly Sherer of Lock Haven University was named wrestler of the month for Region one, Samarah Chavez of King University earned Region two honors, Clarissa Agnostini of Adrian College earned Region three honors and Marissa Gallegos of Colorado Mesa University earned Region five honors. All five wrestlers are eligible for the National Wrestler of the Month which will be released on Dec. 8.
Makoyed will be traveling to Coralville, Iowa with Team USA to compete at the 2023 Men's and Women's Freestyle World Cup at the Xtream Arena on Dec. 10-11. The No. 1-ranked Cardinals prepare to host the third annual North Central College Women's Open on Sunday, Dec. 11. The action is set to start at 9 am inside the Residence Hall/Recreation Center.
