Cardinals Break Single-Season Win Record with 17th Win

ORLANDO, Fla. (Mar. 14, 2022) -  The North Central College women's tennis team beat No. 20 Denison University 7-2 before sweeping the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis (UHSP) 9-0 to win their 17th match of the season, setting a new single-season record for wins.

Mikayla Edquiban and Sydney Sawyer earned the first Cardinals' win of the day at No. 3 doubles as they took down Hannah Bradvica and Kendall Schrader of Denison at No. 2 doubles. Giving North Central a 2-1 lead following doubles play, Kaeli Smashey and Natalie Bassett won a hard-fought match, 8-5 at N. 2 doubles.

In singles play, Sawyer captured the North Central first win, 6-3, 6-2 before Edquiban won at the No. 5 position. Clinching the win over No. 20 Denison was Alaina Kanthaphixay with a 6-2, 6-4 win in the No. 4 spot. Bassett and Smashey each won their singles matches to secure a 7-2 win.

In match two, the Cardinals faced a short-handed UHSP team. The tandem of Hougland/Nina Patience posted an 8-3 win while Kayla McSweeney and Sjana Henderson won 8-1 at No. 2 doubles. Anna Fox and Linsy Jante won at No. 3 doubles by forfeit.

Sweeping singles action was Kanthaphixay, Henderson, Patience, and McSweeney. Katie McGraw and Ellie Gallagher each recorded wins by forfeit to complete the 9-0 sweep.

North Central concludes their spring break trip on Wednesday by taking on the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse.
