Four-Run Sixth Pushes Cardinals Past Sewanee, 5-1

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (March 15, 2022) - Playing their fifth game in five days, the No. 5 North Central College baseball team used a four-run sixth inning to prevail in a 5-1 win over Sewanee. Coming in relief, pitcher Robert Deischer picked up the win, in part by working out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the sixth.

Jaedin Kotecki saw his first action of the season by starting on the mound for the Cardinals. After allowing one run to the Tigers in the first, Kotecki settled in and held Sewanee scoreless for the rest of his day.

North Central answered in the bottom of the first as John Petty singled to start the half-inning. Dom Listi pushed him over to second on a hit by pitch. Jared Wojcik moved Petty and Listi up a base on a sacrifice bunt before Paul Beverly scored Petty on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.

Neither team showed signs of breaking the 1-1 tie until the sixth inning when Sewanee loaded the bases. Deischer replaced Kotecki and forced a flyout and a fielder's choice to work out of the jam and keep the Tigers at one run.

In the bottom of the sixth, Luke Lehnen singled and advanced to second on a Sewanee error. Michael Patterson moved them over on a sacrifice bunt, followed by a Brent Swenson walk. After a Tiger pitching change, Michael Davis walked with the bases loaded to give the Cardinals a 2-1 edge. Petty singled and Listi hit a sacrifice fly to extend the North Central lead to 4-1. With the bases loaded again, Beverly added another insurance run with a base on balls.

Deischer struck out the side on the top of the seventh and cruised the rest of the way to earn his first win of the season. In his 3.2 innings pitched, Deischer struck out four while giving up no runs. Petty went 4-for-5 on the day with an RBI while Beverly drove in two on offense for the Cardinals.
