No. 27 Women's Tennis Downs Falcons, 8-1

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Mar. 26, 2022) - In their first home match of the spring season, the No. 27 North Central College women's tennis team swept doubles play before taking five of six singles matches on their way to an 8-1 victory.

In doubles play, the Cardinals jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The tandem of Hannah Hougland and Alaina Kanthaphixay posted an 8-2 win. At second doubles, Kaeli Smashey and Natalie Bassett secured an 8-1 victory while Sydney Sawyer and Mikayla Edquiban earned a hard-fought 8-7 win at third doubles.

Sjana Henderson came away with the first win for the Cardinals in singles play as she won 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 5 position. Bassett earned the clinch at No. 3 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Cheyanne Phillips. After Smashey went toe-to-toe with the No. 1 single from CUW, she cruised to a 6-0 second set to lock in the win. Sawyer went 6-3, 6-0 to beat Mallory Moen at No. 4 while Nina Patience won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6.

North Central is back in action on Friday as they compete in the Midwest Invitational. The event will be played at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis. with the draws being announced this week.
