AURORA, Ill. (Mar. 30, 2022) - The North Central College men's lacrosse team extended their winning streak to three this afternoon as
Jack Moran scored with five second remaining in the game securing the 15-14 win over the Aurora University Spartans.Â
The Cardinals (4-4, 0-0 CCIW) found themselves chasing early in the game as the Spartans (4-4) rattled off three quick goals before Luke Illgen would get the Cardinals on the board after a Spartan penalty, cutting the lead to two. After a Spartans goal, Joey D'Cuhna would score off an assist from Scott Allgood, making the score 4-2 with one minute left in the first quarter. The Spartans would respond as Brody Macdonald brought the score to 5-2 with just 31 seconds remaining in the quarter but the Cardinals would tally two quick goals as Tom Eberhardt and Nick Rubino scored, putting the Cardinals down one after the first quarter. The Spartans came out in the second quarter ready to attack as they scored two more goals extending their lead to three. However, the Cardinals would bounce back and go on a three goal stretch that started with an Eberhardt goal. Allgood would score his first goal of the game with just eight seconds remaining, putting the Cardinals down one heading into the half.Â
In the second half, Illgen would tally two goals just one minute apart to give the Cardinals a one goal lead early in the third quarter. After two goals by Jimmy Gorecki, Moran would tally his second goal of the game tying up the contest for fourth time. Allgood and Rubino would tally two more goals for the Cardinals giving them a one goal lead with just six minutes to play. Ben Strub of Aurora would tie the game up shortly after Rubino's goal but Rubino would score again putting the Cardinals back on top 14-13. With just under three minutes to play, Strub would strike again tying the game at 14. The final minutes of the fourth quarter were at a standstill and it looked like this game was headed to overtime but Moran would score with five seconds remaining, giving the Cardinals a 15-14 win.Â
Moran, Eberhardt, Illgen and Rubino each had three goals for the Cardinals while Allgood had two goals and three assists. Trenton Herubin led the defense with two caused turnovers and three ground balls while Jake Allgood improved his record to 4-4 on the season, tallying 14 saves.Â
The Cardinals open College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) play on Wednesday, April 6 as they take a trip to Bloomington, Ill. to take on the Titans of Illinois Wesleyan University. The opening face-off is set for 7:30 pm inside Tucci StadiumÂ
