Ten Wrestlers Honored as NWCA Scholar All-Americans

NWCA Women's Scholar All-Americans

Apr. 18, 2022 - After a very impressive season, the North Central College women's wrestling team made more history as they set a new program record for Scholar All-Americans as ten wrestlers were named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American teams while the team was ranked sixth in the Team Scholar All-America rankings.  

Colorado Mesa University had the highest GPA out of all the teams with a 3.87 followed by McKendree University (3.776) in second, Augsburg University (3.766) in third and Adrian College (3.765) in fourth. The Cardinals were in sixth with a 3.721 overall GPA followed by King University (3.711) in seventh, Tiffin University (3.647) in eighth, Lindenwood University (3.607) in ninth and East Stroudsburg University (3.487) rounding out the top ten. 

Angelina Graff, a Sociology major, was named Scholar All-Americans for the 109-pound weight class. Graff posted a 21-18 record this season while taking home third place at the Regional Championships and earning All-American status at the National Championships taking home eighth place.Sydney Petzinger, undeclared, was named a Scholar All-American in the 109-pound weight class as well. She posted a 30-9 record while taking home All-American honors as she placed second at the National Championships. 

Kendra Ryan and Mateah Roehl were named Scholar All-Americans in the 116-pound weight class. Ryan, an Exercise Science major, posted a 27-13 record this season while taking home third at the Regional Championships and earning All-American honors at the National Championships placing sixth. Roehl, a marketing major, was honored as a NWCA Scholar All-American for the second time in her career as she posted a 24-10 record this season while claiming second at the Regional Championships while earning All-American honors for the second straight season, placing seventh at the National Championships.

Amani Jones, a Psychology major, was named a Scholar All-American for the first time in her career as she posted a 35-8 record this season while taking home second at the Regional Championships and earning All-American honors for the  first time as she placed fifth at the National Championships. Yele Aycock, a Exercise Science and Psychology double major, was named a Scholar All-American as she posted a 25-13 record this season while taking home fourth at the Regional Championships. 

Sara Sulejmani, a Health Science major, was named a Scholar All-American for the first time in her career as she posted a 25-12 record this season at 136-pounds while taking home second place at the Regional Championships and earning All-American status for the first time as she placed seventh at the National Championships. Riley Aamold, a Exercise Science major, was named a Scholar All-American for the first time in her career as she posted a 23-14 record this season in the 143-pound weight class while claiming the Regional Title and earned All-American honors as she placed sixth at the National Championships. 

Fiona McConnell, a Health Science major, was named a Scholar All-American for the first time in her career as she posted a 21-10 record in the 170-pound weight class this season while taking home fifth at the North Central College Open and fourth at the Bearcat Open. Yelena Makoyed, a Psychology major, was named a Scholar All-American for the third consecutvie season as she posted a 27-1 record this season while claiming her second consecutive National Title and earned All-American honors for the third consecutive season.

This season the Cardinals placed in the top five for the first time in their young history as they took home fourth place at the NCWWC National Championships on Mar. 5 while taking home second at the Northwest Regional Championships. They posted a 14-2 dual meet record taking down four ranked opponents while taking home third place at the NWCA National Duals.
