LISLE, Ill. (April 29, 2022) - Now just one match away from a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season, the North Central College women's tennis team defeated Augustana College, 5-0 to move into the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Automatic Qualifier Tournament Championship.
Mikayla Edquiban and Sydney Sawyer earned the first win of the day as they cruised to an 8-0 victory at No. 3 doubles. Kaeli Smashey and Natalie Bassett also rolled to an 8-0 win before Alaina Kanthaphixay and Hannah Hougland finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win in the No. 1 position.
Needing only two wins in singles play to advance, Sawyer made quick work of her opponent to win 6-0, 6-1 before Hougland earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles to clinch the 5-0 win. Bassett and Edquiban each won their first set before the Cardinals locked up the victory.
North Central will face the winner of Wheaton/Millikin on Saturday afternoon with the champion securing a spot in the NCAA Tournament. That match is set for 2 PM at Benet Academy Tennis Courts.
