CHICAGO (May 13, 2022) - The North Central College men's tennis team ended their best season in program history on Friday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Tournament as the Cardinals fell to the hands of No. 16 Gustavus Adolphus College 5-0 at the Stagg Tennis Courts in Chicago.
The Gusties earned the first victory of the day at No. 2 doubles as Daniel Fouchier and Sourabh Terakanambi beat Colten Way and Andy Hinch 8-5. Morgan Red and Javier Suarez Balsera battled in the No. 3 spot but also fell 8-5. In first doubles, Ramon Vilarroig Martinez and Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez hung tight with the fourth-ranked doubles team in the region, Nick Aney and Alex Budde but the Gusties prevailed to win 8-5 as well.
Needing just two wins in singles play, Gustavus Adolphus picked them up at No. 5 and No. 3 to clinch the match. Both Vilarroig Martinez and Way won their first sets prior to the match's conclusion.
The Cardinals posted a 25-3 record on the year with the most wins in program history while making their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. North Central was also crowned the CCIW Champions for the first time since 1961 and posted an 18-match winning streak throughout the season.
