PITTSBURGH, Pa. (May 13, 2022) - Facing a top-five team in the country, the North Central College women's tennis team lost 5-0 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to No. 5 Middlebury University on Friday afternoon in Pittsburgh to conclude their 2021-22 season.
Doubles play began with the No. 6th doubles team in their region Any Delman and Gena Huang defeating Hannah Hougland and Alaina Kanthaphixay, 8-1 at No. 1 doubles. Kaeli Smashey and Natalie Bassett fought but ultimately fell 8-4 before Sydney Sawyer and Mikayla Edquiban battled but fell 8-5.
In singles action, Middlebury took care of business at No. 2 and No. 5 to earn the victory and move onto round three of the NCAA Tournament. Smashey earned a 6-3 first set win over Brinlea La Barge, the ninth-ranked singles player in their region before the match ended.
The Cardinals end the year at 22-6, the most wins in school history. They earned two CCIW Titles on the season along with winning their first-ever match in the NCAA Tournament.
