WHITEWATER, Wis. (Sept. 17, 2022) - Wrapping up the Dig Pacini Classic, the North Central College women's volleyball team fell to both Coe College and the No. 15 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Saturday inside of the Williams Center.
Coe opened the match on a 10-1 run and quickly found themselves ahead 20-8 in the opening set. Katie Little tallied her fifth kill to put the score at 22-11 before the Kohawks finished out the first set with a 25-13 win.
Set two started similar to the first as Coe jumped out to an early 10-2 lead. Brooke Duncan notched her first kill of the match to score the Cardinals' fourth point of the set. The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin's top server Taylor O'Malley hit her first service ace of the match to push the set to 15-7. North Central went on a 4-0 run thanks to two kills from Aidan Brown and two Kohawk errors. Despite the Cardinals' best efforts, Coe took set two with a 25-16 win.
The third set went back-and-forth as an O'Malley ace tied the contest at four. Each team went on 4-0 runs to knot the set at 11-11. A kill from Brown pushed the set to 15-16 as the Kohawks never surrendered their lead to win the final set 25-19 and win the match, 3-0.
The Cardinals' second match of the day began with a Maddi Barickman ace to propel North Central to a 4-0 advantage early in the first set. The Warhawks fought back to tie the set at five before North Central forced three UW-Whitewater errors to take a 9-6 lead. A kill from Kendra Battle capped off a 6-2 run. Aleesa Andresen subbed in and recorded an ace to force a Warhawk timeout. Having led the entire set, North Central secured the first set victory with a 25-21.
UW-Whitewater took control of the second set early on as they jumped out to a 14-5 lead. Back-to-back kills from Abbi Barickman brought the Cardinals within six before the Warhawks closed the set on a 6-2 run to win set two, 25-14. A Brown kill gave the set its ninth tie before the Warhawks won the next six points on their way to a 25-17 win in set three.
Kills from Abbi Barickman and Battle put the Cardinals on top 4-2 early in the fourth set. UW-Whitewater scored six of the next seven points before a kill from Amber Vande Hei stopped the run. The Warhawks went on a 9-2 rally to secure the final set of the match with a 25-16 win.
Brown was named to the All-Tournament Team alongside KellyAnn Sotiros, Hannah Proctor, and Erin McNeil from UW-Whitewater, Maggie Furlong and Maddy Maahs from Coe with Maycee Karpfinger from Concordia University Wisconsin to round out the team.
North Central opens up CCIW play on Tuesday as they travel to Rock Island to square off against Augustana College. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. in the Carver Center.
