LISLE, Ill, (Sept. 24, 2022) - Adding two more wins to their conference slate, the North Central College women's tennis team ran past Illinois Wesleyan University, 9-0 in their first match before taking down North Park University, 9-0 in the nightcap on Saturday at Benet Academy Tennis Courts.
Playing at No. 1 doubles for the first time this season, Natalie Bassett and Mikayla Edquiban took care of business with an 8-1 victory while the tandems of Anastasia Bozovic/Kensington Payne and Kayla McSweeney/Ellie Gallagher rolled to 8-0 victories to take a 3-0 lead. The Cardinals did not drop a game in all of singles play as they cruised to their tenth win of the season.
In their second match of the day, Smashey and Bassett teamed up to earn a hard-fought 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles. Abigail Penados and Payne earned an 8-1 win in the No. 2 doubles spot before Nina Patience and Edquiban won at No. 3 doubles.
After Smashey won her singles match at No. 1, Penados secured a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles. Basset posted a 6-1, 6-0 win in the No. 3 position while Edquiban tallied a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Nina Kisin. At No. 5, Payne won 6-3, 6-3 with Patience earning a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 6 to secure the 9-0 win for the Cardinals.
North Central heads to St. Louis, Mo. on Friday as they compete in the three-day ITA Regional Championships, hosted by Washington University in St. Louis.
