Men’s Wrestling Claims Second-Straight CCIW Title

MEQUON, Wis. (Jan. 21, 2023) - The North Central College men's wrestling team traveled to Mequon, Wis. Saturday and conquered the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Dual Meet title for the second straight year with wins over Milwaukee School of Engineering and Concordia University (Wis.) inside the John Buck Fieldhouse. 

North Central took on MSOE in their first dual of the day and they jumped out to an early 18-0 lead following forfeit wins at 125, 133, and 141-pounds. Caleb Magruder took on Max Sanderfoot in the first true match and only needed 47 seconds to pin Sanderfoot in the 149-pound bout. Kenny Siwicki fell in the 157-pound match to Michael Smith but Jared Gumila would pick a 4-1 decision win over Harry Nemcek in the 165-pounds match to give the Cardinals a 27-6 lead. In the 174-pound bout, Casey Aikman picked up the second pin for the Cardinals as he defeated Joseph Estrada. Payton Geinger gave the Cardinals a 36-6 lead in the 184-pound match as she defeated Caleb Brick by an 11-9 sudden victory before Rickie Clark defeated Jake Schmitt by an 11-5 decision. The Cardinals would drop the 285-pound match but it wouldn't be enough as they defeated MSOE 39-12. 

The Cardinals took on CUW in the final dual of the day and Christian Guzman kicked off the action with a 17-0 technical fall win over Devin Gore in the 125-pound weight class. The Cardinals would go up 10-0 after Josh Robison would pick up the Cardinals second technical fall of the day as he defeated Emilio Acosta 17-0. 13th-ranked Bradley Rosen earned a 12-2 major decision win over Gabe Rodriguez in the 141-pound weight class before Charles Dojan would pin Frank Budederi in 20 seconds to put the Cardinals up 20-0. Seventh-ranked Alex Villar won the 157-pound bout via forfeit before Cole Cervantes pinned Bryce Claypool in the  165-pound match to give the Cardinals a commanding 32-0 lead. Aikman picked up his second pin of the day in the 174-pound weight class, defeating Carson Cook before Geigner defeated Alexadnros Alexiades by a 16-0 technical fall in the 184-pound match. Elijah Brockie fell in the 197-pound bout but Robby Bates closed out the dual by pinning Cameron Mercer to give the Cardinals the 49-6 win. 

In extra matches, Max Ness picked up two wins on the day, one by pin and one by decision while Jerred Durian won both of his matches by fall. 

The Cardinals have won 42 consecutive CCIW duals, their last conference loss was on Jan. 10, 2017 where they lost to Elmhurst 20-19. The Cardinals have won back-to-back CCIW Dual Championships, winning the first ever title last season. They have posted a perfect 8-0 conference record while outsourcing their opponents 324-46. 

The seventh-ranked Cardinals return to action on Friday, Jan. 27 as they compete in the Pete Willson Invitational. The action is set to start at 11 am inside King Arena at Wheaton College.
