NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Jan. 24, 2023) - The North Central College women's wrestling team honored their two seniors,
Malea Palahniuk and
Yelena Makoyed, before dominating UW-Stevens Point 43-2 in their final dual of the 2022-23 season on Tuesday night inside Gregory Arena.
Palahniuk, a senior from Springfield, Ore., has won 45 matches in her career and is a two-time NCWW All-American and is currently ranked fourth in the nation at 155-pounds.Makoyed, a senior from Orangevale, Calif., has a career record of 85-5 and is a three-time NCWW All-American and two-time National Champion. Makoyed is currently ranked No. 1 in 170-pounds.
Fifth-ranked Maddie Avila kicked the dual off with a 10-0 technical fall win over Kelly Enriquez in the 101-pound bout to give the Cardinals an early 4-0 lead. Second-ranked Sydney Petzinger put the Cardinals up by eight after defeating Alexis Winecke by technical fall in the 109-pound bout before second-ranked Jaslynn Gallegos pinned Rose Ann Marshall just one minute into the 116-pound match. Third-ranked Amani Jones picked up the Cardinals third and final technical fall of the night, defeating Abby Nelson 10-0 in the 123-pound match. Fourth-ranked Sara Sterner battled with Amor Tuttle in the 130-pound bout and picked up a 5-2 decision to give the Cardinals a 20-1 lead.
Second-ranked Yele Aycock started off the second half of the dual with a win by forfeit in the 136-pound bout before fourth-ranked Kendall Bostelman pinned Anna Strand in 20 seconds to give the Cardinals a commanding 30-1 lead. Fourth-ranked Palahniuk defeated Jade Herzer by a 5-1 decision in the 155-pound weight class before top-ranked Makoyed pinned Tabitha Breitrick in 40 seconds to give the Cardinals a 38-2 lead. Sixth-ranked Brittyn Corbishley only needed 22 seconds to finish things off for the Cardinal, pinning Brindelyn Eternicka to give the Cardinals a 43-2 win.
In extra matches, Amaya Yoshizumi picked up two wins, defeating Angelica Torres Lima by a 6-1 decision and Morgan Bethea by 10-0 technical fall. Shelby Ottum only needed 58 seconds to pin Claire Matthews.
The top-ranked Cardinals return to action on Sunday as they compete in the first ever College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Championships. The action is set to start at 2 pm inside Gregory Arena.
