LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Jan. 7, 2023) - Following a 2-1 record on day one of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals, the North Central College men's wrestling team finished in seventh place after beating The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) 24-18 on Saturday afternoon inside the Kentucky Exposition Center.
The Cardinals (8-3) had a top-ten matchup with fifth-ranked Baldwin Wallce after staying alive in the tournament with a 28-6 win over Castleton on day one. Tenth-ranked
Julian Valtierrez got the dual kicked off at 125-pounds with a battle against the defending National Champion, Jacob Decatur. The contest was close but Decatur edged Valtierrez by a 3-2 decision to put Baldwin Wallace out in front early. Top-ranked
Robert Precin battled with fifth-ranked Jaden Hinton in the 133-pound bout and Precin would tie the dual at three with a 10-4 decision win. In the 141-pound weight class,
Bradley Rosen got the Cardinals their first lead with a 9-3 decision win over David Panda but Baldwin Wallce would tie the dual at nine following an injury default at 149-pounds. Baldwin Wallace would win the next three matches at 157, 165 and 174 pounds before
Payton Geigner picked up six points for North Central after pinning Griffin Rathburn. Baldwin Wallace won the 197-pound match but 14th-ranked
Robby Bates pinned Matthew Werts in the 285-pound match but it was not enough as the Cardinals fell 25-18.
The Cardinals would fall into the seventh place match and would square off against The College of New Jersey (TCNJ).
Christian Guzman kicked off the dual with a 12-5 decision win over Ryan Rosenthal before Precin pinned Kyle Nase to give North Central a 9-0 lead. TCNJ would win the 141-pound bout but Charlie Dojan would defeat Michael Conklin by a 9-4 decision to keep the Cardinals ahead by six.
Alex Villar put the Cardinals up 18-6 as he pinned Matthew Sacco but Nicholas Sacco (TCNJ) would defeat
Cole Cervantes by an 8-7 decision to keep them in the match. TCNJ would take the 174 and 184-pound matches but
Elijah Brockie would get the Cardinals back on the board with a 6-1 decision win over Joe Daddario. Bates sealed the win for the Cardinals as he defeated Peter Wersinger by sudden victory to give the Cardinals a seventh place finish.
This is the second consecutive season that the Cardinals have placed at the National Duals as they finished in third last season. They posted a 3-2 record while outscoring their opponent 113-83. The Cardinals are back in action on Thursday, Jan. 12 as they travel to Elmhurst University for the Battle of the Birds. The first whistle is set for 7 pm inside R.A. Faganel Hall.
