Men's Volleyball Drops Trine in 3-0 Sweep

Feb. 22, 2023 - After five-straight matches on the road, the North Central College men's volleyball team returned to Gregory Arena in dominating fashion, turning in its seventh three-set sweep this season over Trine University on Wednesday night. 

North Central (9-3) picked up an early 5-1 lead over Trine (3-9) in set one with a four-point possession led by Jeremy Cardenas with two kills, a service ace by Ben Williams, and a block by Tyler Donovan. The Cardinals extended their lead to 19-10 before the Thunder gained some momentum and help the Cardinals to single-point possessions. With the score set at 23-18, Jared Moser and Jake Miller knocked down a kill each to take set one at 25-18.

North Central turned in a .438 hitting percentage in set two as Jared Moser helped the Cardinals to a five-point run with three kills to bring the score to 13-5. Trine made a final push with three straight points to set the score at 14-22 until Moser tacked on two more kills in addition to a Thunder attack error to seal set two at 25-15.

Trading points at the start of set three, Trine led 3-2 before the Cardinals strung together six-straight points to take the lead at 8-3. North Central continued to chip away at the score two points at a time until a final Thunder attack error led the Cardinals to a 25-19 set win.

Moser led North Central offensively with 14 kills followed by Cardenas with eight and Williams with seven. Michael Szews picked up two service aces while Tyler Donovan led in both blocks (4) and assists (32).

The Cardinals are set to begin conference play on Saturday, February 25 with a trip to Rock Island, Illinois to take on the Augustana College Vikings. Match time at the Carver Center is set for 3 p.m.
