NWCA Names Gallegos Wrestler of the Month

Feb. 3, 2023 - Following a month where she won all of her matches by fall and defeated the No.1-ranked wrestler in 116-pounds, Jaslynn Gallegos of the North Central College women's wrestling team was named the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Region Four Wrestler of the month on Friday. 

Gallegos, a junior from Brighton, Colo., posted a perfect 5-0 record during January, defeating all of her opponents by fall. Gallegos, the second-ranked wrestler in 116-pounds, helped the Cardinals finish as the NWCA National Dual Runner-ups as she pinned Nohea Moniz of 14th-ranked Sacred Heart University, Carisa Epling of third-ranked Colorado Mesa University and No. 1-ranked Samara Chavez of second-ranked King University. 

Gallegos picked up two more pins in the Cardinals 43-2 win over UW-Stevens Point and on her way to the 116-pound College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) title. Gallegos won all of her matches in only four minutes and 18 seconds. and leads the Cardinals with 18 pins on the season.

Kaelani Schufeldt of Lock Haven University earned Region One honors, Viktorya Torress of King University earned Region Two honors, Nyla Burgess of Adrian College was named Region Three Wrestler of the Month while Rewa Chababo of Ozarks and Holly Beaudoin of Colorado Mesa were honored as Region Five Co-wrestler of the month. All six wrestlers are eligible for the NWCA National Wrestler of the Month. 

Gallegos and the top-ranked Cardinals travel to Lebanon, Ill. to compete in the Bearcat Open. The action is set to start at 9 am inside the Melvin Price Convocation Center on the campus of McKendree University.
