NAPERVILLE, Ill (Mar. 11, 2023) - The North Central College men's volleyball team stormed past the No. 4 Carthage College Firebirds 3-0 in dominating fashion as the trio
Austin Scott,
Jared Moser, and
Tyler Donovan etched themselves in the program record books on Saturday afternoon inside of Gregory Arena.
Scott finished with 19 kills over the three sets, good for the second most in program history while Moser tallied 16 kills, fourth best in school history for a three-set match. Moser hit .419 while Scott posted a .342 hitting percentage. Donovan dished out 41 assists, the second-most in program history for a three-set match. As a team, the Cardinals hit .356 while holding Carthage to a .213 hitting percentage, their second-worst performance this season.
Jeremy Cardenas scored the first point of the match on a kill, set up by Donovan. Moser, Scott, and Luke Schmidt combined for four points early in the set to give the Cardinals a 9-4 advantage. The teams traded points until Moser and Scott scored four of the next five points for North Central as they held a 19-14 lead. The Firebirds responded with a 4-1 run but it wasn't enough as Scott closed out the first set with a kill, giving the Cardinals a 25-21 win in the opening set.Â
Set two began with back-and-forth action as a kill from Cardenas put North Central on top, 11-8. Carthage battled back to knot the set at 14-14 before a Moser kill sparked a 5-1 run to give the Cardinals a 19-15 edge. The teams alternated points, but two Moser kills down the stretch clinched set two for North Central, 25-22.
Looking to complete their first sweep of Carthage in program history, a kill from Schmidt put the Cardinals up 6-3. After another kill by Scott, a block from Cardenas and Donovan put North Central in the driver's seat, up 13-7. Already ahead 19-15, a kill from Scott opened a 5-0 run from the Cardinals as Moser scored the final points of the match with North Central defeating Carthage, 25-18 in the final set and 3-0 for the match.Â
The Cardinals travel to North Park University on Tuesday evening, looking to improve to 6-0 against the Vikings in the all-time series. That match is set to begin at 7 p.m. inside North Park Gymnasium.
