PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (Mar. 16, 2023) - Despite allowing no earned runs in the game, the North Central College baseball team fell to Arcadia University who took advantage of four Cardinals errors to win 3-1 in the final game of the Snowbird Baseball Classic.
Starting pitcher Jason Shanner took the mound for the fourth time this season, making his second start and took a no-hitter into the fifth inning. After a single from the Knights, Shanner committed a throwing error to put a runner on third. Arcadia executed a squeeze play successfully and took a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals responded in the top of the sixth as Nolan King hit a leadoff single to left field. Dom Listi laid down a sacrifice bunt to put King into scoring position. King advanced to third on a wild pitch and came around to score on a clutch two-out double from Justin Rios to even the game at 1-1.
Shanner worked out of a jam in the seventh as he put a stop to a Knight two-out rally and stranded a runner on third by forcing a popup to John Michael Scumaci at second base.
Robert Deischer relieved Shanner in the eighth inning. Following a single and a sacrifice bunt, Arcadia singled up the middle and scored on another North Central error. The Knights took advantage of a final Cardinals' error to score two runs in the inning in two hits.
In the ninth, Rios walked and Luke Lehnen singled to give North Central one last chance to extend the game. With runners on base, the Cardinals' could not score either runner as Arcadia secured a 3-1 win over North Central.
Rios tallied two hits and an RBI while King scored the lone run for the Cardinals. On the mound, Shanner struck out eight and allowed just two hits, one run and no earned runs on the day. Deischer was credited with the loss as he struck out one batter in his one inning of work.
