REDLANDS, Calif. (Mar. 17, 2023)Â - Greeted by an unexpected opponent in the form of inclement weather, the North Central College softball team saw its Tuesday double header at Occidental College shortened to a single five-inning contest and its Wednesday games rained out completely before playing an improvised twin bill against Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and the University of Redlands at Redlands' Field of Dreams.
The Cardinals trailed, 2-1, in the bottom of the fifth inning at Occidental's Bell Field Tuesday when play was halted and the game declared at an end due to heavy, persistent rain. North Central's lone run was scored in the top of the fifth when pinch hitter
Allison Lambert laced a double to center field to score
Talia Torosian from second base with two out. Starting pitcher
Caroline Dooley permitted four hits and one walk while striking out four in 3 1/3 innings.
The scheduled second game was cancelled, as were Wednesday's scheduled games at Redlands.
North Central took on Pomona-Pitzer in Thursday's opener, losing by a 2-0 count despite 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief by Dooley. Redlands won the final game of the afternoon, 16-0.
The Cardinals play their final Spring Break games Friday at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College. Play at Athena Field is set to begin at noon Pacific time (2 p.m. Central).
