NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Apr. 8, 2023) - On a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium, the North Central College women's lacrosse team honored their two senior members before falling to Carroll University 17-6 in their College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW).

Prior to the contest, head coach Vasiliki Barakos-Berkman and the entire Cardinal team honored Tanya Czosek and Abbey Triebe for their hard work and dedication over the last four years.

The Pioneers (9-2, 1-0 CCIW) came out firing on all cylinders, scoring six unanswered goals to give them a 6-0 lead after the first quarter. The Cardinals (3-9, 0-1 CCIW) drew first blood in the second quarter as Triebe sent her shot past the Pioneers goalkeeper to cut the deficit to five. The Pioneers finished out the first half with a three goal stretch to head into halftime with a 9-1 lead.

The Pioneers found  the back of the net first in the second half to give them a nine goal lead but the two Cardinal seniors connected as Triebe found Czosek for the Cardinals second goal of the day with 12:16 remaining. However, the Pioneer lead grew to twelve as their offense rattled off four unanswered goals but with 26 seconds remaining Czosek found the back of the net to bring the score to 14-3 in favor of the Pioneers. Abby MacKenzi kicked off the scoring in the fourth quarter as she finished off a Czosek assist to cut the deficit to ten with 13:22 remaining. After a Pioneer goal, Lucy Culig found the back of the net for the first time but the Pioneers would score two more goals of their own to bring the score to 17-5. With just seconds remaining, Czosek buried her shot into the back of the net but the Cardinals would fall 17-6.

Czosek led the Cardinals with three goals while MacKenzie, Culig and Triebe each scored once. Ellie Gosselin and Tori Leonard led the defensive efforts with three caused turnovers and Leonard scooped up six ground balls. Bella LaRocco fell to 3-9 on the season as she tallied nine saves in the contest.

The Cardinals continue CCIW play on Wednesday, April 12 as they travel to Illinois Wesleyan University for a 7 pm matchup with the Titans inside Tucci Stadium.
