Lake Forest, Ill. (Sept. 20, 2023) - The North Central College men's soccer team got their third shutout of the season after beating Lake Forest College 2-0 on Wednesday evening.
The Cardinals completely dominated the first half on both sides of the ball. The Cardinals defense kept the Foresters to no shots and only one corner kick in the first half of the game. North Central's offense had a total of seven shots in the first half. With shots close to the net, but off target, from
Jacopo De Collibus,
Eloi Nyibizi,
Matteo Innocenti, and
Ty Konrad, the Cardinals did not get the ball into the back of the net till the 41st minute of the game.
In the 41st minute,
Jared Urueta passed the ball to
Pepijn Hakstege. Hakstege fired the ball into the back of the net past the Foresters goalkeeper Dennis Turdean. With only seconds left in the first half the Cardinals offense took one more shot, the deflection of the ball went right towards
Peter Kimba. Kimba was able to get his head on the ball but the shot was saved by Lake Forest defenders.
The Cardinals offense and defense, once again, lead the second half of the game. Cardinals goalkeeper
Riley Johnson, completed a routine stop in the 52nd minute when Elliot Hull sent the ball down the center. In the 54th minute of the game, De Collibus got past his defender and found himself wide open. He blasted the ball past Turdean sealing the game for the Cardinals with a two-goal lead.
In the 61st minute of the game, Lake Forest substituted Andrew Swacha in net for Turdean. Ten seconds later, De Collibus put another shot on goal but this time Swacha was able to stop the ball before it went into the net.
The Cardinals defense overpowered the Foresters the entirety of the game. Lake Forest was only able to get one shot on goal and only took two corner kicks in 90 minutes.
The Cardinals open up conference play on Saturday afternoon when they host Elmhurst University at 3 p.m. inside Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
