Jan. 30, 2024 - The North Central College men's volleyball team earned their third win of the season by taking down Aurora University 3-1 Tuesday night.

Tied 1-1 in the first set, the Cardinals amped-up their play and went on a five-point hot streak (6-1). The five points were shared among the team as Mitchell Hester, Austin Scott, Luke Schmidt, and Jared Moser (2) each tallied kills. The Spartans went on a four-point run next, but the Cardinals followed up with another five-point run (11-5). Aurora tied the game up at 13-13 and kept their momentum the rest of the set. The Spartans won set one 25-20.

In the second set, North Central started hot again, but this time cautious not to let their flame burn out. Up 3-1, Cooper Lundal was on the service line and tossed up an exceptional serve to keep the momentum. The Spartans never caught up, and the Cardinals took the set 25-12.

The third set brought two lead changes and nine tied scores. Tied 17-17, North Central found some extra power. The Cardinals capitalized on a service error before Scott recorded two kills, and Schmidt tallied one of his own (21-17). Schmidt finished off the set with his eighth kill of the night.

Aurora was not giving up easily and quickly went up 4-0 in the fourth set. North Central earned a few points, but the Spartans were still in the lead (8-3). Little by little, the Cardinals chipped away at the Spartan's lead and found themselves only down by two points (11-13). Spartan errors took North Central on a six-point run, ultimately giving the Cardinals the lead (17-13). North Central did not ease up, and Schmidt ended the game with a kill to the back row.

The win was a team effort around the board. Austin Scott led the team in kills (12), but Moser and Schmidt were not far behind with ten kills each. Tyler Donovan tallied 37 assists, and Danny Smithers recorded 16 digs.

The Cardinals close-out their five-match homestand at 7 pm Feb. 1, against Concordia University Wisconsin inside Gregory Arena.
