Women’s Basketball Falls to Coe in Non-Conference Bout

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Dec. 17, 2024) - Taking a break from College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin action, the North Central College women's basketball team dropped a 74-58 clash to Coe College on Tuesday night inside Kohawk Arena.

Josylin Simmons-Doxie scored the Cardinals' first five points by knocking down a three pointer and making two free throws early on. Megan McClure brought North Central within four thanks to a jumper, 15-11. Layups from Elle Sutter and Simmons-Doxie kept the Cardinals close before Ameli Sanchez hit a deep ball with four seconds left in the first quarter, Coe leading 21-20.

Sanchez buried another three to give North Central its first lead of the contest, 23-21. Megan Duffy knocked down a three before Sutter scored a fastbreak layup to force a Kohawks timeout. Coe battled back to even the score at 31-31. The teams traded baskets as a McClure jumper gave North Central a 36-34 advantage at the break.

Coe began the third quarter on a 7-2 run before taking a 48-40 lead. Grace Kieffer halted the Kohawk run with a layup, on the assist from McClure. Sutter cut into the deficit, but Coe kept their foot on the gas, taking a 55-48 edge with 10 minutes to play. Biz Daly converted on a trip to the charity stripe early in the fourth quarter. The Kohawks used a 10-2 run to take control of the game, 67-52. Simmons-Doxie and Daly made free throws but Coe secured a 74-58 win over the Cardinals.

Daly led the Cardinals with 13 points while Simmons-Doxie and Kieffer added nine points each. McClure tallied eight points, five rebounds and two assists  North Central shot 33% from the field, compared to Coe's 43% mark. Taylor Brunson led all players with 24 points in the game.

The Cardinals close out 2024 with a New Year's Eve contest against Edgewood College. Tip-off inside the Todd Wehr Edgedome in Madison, Wis. is set for 1 p.m.
