NWCA Release
Â
Feb. 6, 2024 - The North Central College women's wrestler,
Alara Boyd, has been chosen the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Regional Wrestler of the Month for Region 4, announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
Boyd started her month off hot at the NWCA Duals. Competing in the 143 class, Boyd met No. 1 Reese Larramendy from the University of Iowa on the mat. Boyd absolutely controlled the match, defeating Larramendy with a 9-4 decision.
Â
Boyd was named the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the weight class in the next rankings, released by the NWCA, as a result of that win against Larramendy. Additionally, she earned her first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Wrestler of the Week honor.
Â
At the end of January, Boyd competed at her first CCIW Championship. Boyd started off by defeating Augustana's Lanie Cecala with a 10-0 technical fall. In the semifinals, Boyd increased her intensity and took down Aurora's Olga Turly with a pin in just 36 seconds. In the championship match, Boyd conquered Aine Moffit (Augustana) with a technical fall (10-0).
Â
Boyd is the third Cardinal wrestler to receive this award this season.
Kendra Ryan was named the NWCA Regional Wrestler of the Month in November as well as National Wrestler of the Month.
Amani Jones was the recipient of the award for the month of December.
Â
No. 1 North Central will take a short drive to Aurora, Ill., to take on No. 7 Aurora University tonight (Feb. 6) at 6 pm inside Thornton Gymnasium.
