Cardinals Clinch 6th Straight Victory

MONTGOMERY, Ill. (Mar. 20, 2024) – The North Central College men's lacrosse team clinched their sixth straight win of the 2024 campaign by downing Aurora University, 12-7 Wednesday afternoon.

Aurora University (3-3) was the first to the net with two goals between Carson Leader and Chris Bucci to put the Spartans up 2-0 with 4:40 left in the first quarter. After a few missed opportunities it was Joey D'Cunha with assistance from Luke Illgen to inch North Central (5-0) within one score before the second quarter.

The second quarter had the Cardinals ripping back in with a quick succession of two goals within 60 seconds from Tom Eberhardt with setups from Jude Vitale and D'Cunha. After a defensive stand and alternating possessions, North Central's Rylan McQueary assisted Charlie Snyder to push the Cardinals up by two with 5:50 to go. Luke DuPont answered in kind to inch the Spartans back within one at 4-3 just two minutes later. The Cardinals again found room for two goals from Illgen within the last 60 seconds of the quarter to put them at 6-3 into halftime.

Aurora scored first in the second half with Owen Spencer finding room just over a minute in. With the score at 6-4, the Cardinals would find three quick goals with two coming from Eberhardt and one from Snyder within two minutes of each other. North Central found one more scoring opportunity when McQueary found room with 1:22 left followed by a goal from Aurora's Tyler Foerstel to set the score at 10-5 into the final quarter.

The final 15 minutes saw alternating goals from Aurora and North Central as Foerstel scored over three minutes in with Snyder following up a minute and a half later. Brody Macdonald scored the final goal for the Spartans with 9:32 left but Dylan Anderson had the final score of the game to seal it up at, 12-7.

In total, Eberhardt led the offense in goals with four while Snyder followed with three and one assist. On the defensive end, Jake Paris led the team with one caused turnover while securing seven groundballs. The CCIW Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week, Aidan Murphy guarded the net for all 60 minutes snagging 17 saves.

North Central returns to Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium to face the University of Dubuque on March 27th. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. Find access to the full 2024 schedule here.
