Apr. 19, 2024Â -Â Both teams secured a shutout victory in Friday's College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) softball double header at Shanower Family Field, as North Central College bounced back from a 2-0 loss to Illinois Wesleyan University with a 4-0 victory to split the games with the Titans for the second straight season.
IWU (17-8, 4-2 CCIW) did all of its scoring in the opener in the very first inning, as three of the Titans' first four batters reached base safely. The visitors managed just one hit and four total baserunners from then on, but allowed the Cardinals to record just three hits and put only one runner in scoring position.
North Central pitcher Juliana Maude was assigned the loss (9-2) despite scattering just three hits and striking out a season-high 10 batters in her ninth complete game of the campaign.
The Cardinals (20-6, 5-3) jumped in front early in the second game, as Katie Del Re led off the first inning with a walk and scored on Talia Torosian's triple to right field. Del Re led off the fifth inning with a triple of her own, the senior's fourth of the season, before scoring on a single by Sarah Lynch. Rachael Madsen drove in Lynch with a two-out base hit, extending the hosts' advantage to 3-0. North Central tacked on an insurance run in the seventh as Torosian doubled to right and scored on a single up the middle by Hailey Morsovillo.
In her third start of the season, pitcher Sam Schilf posted a complete-game shutout of the Titans, who failed to plate a run for just the third time this season. Schilf allowed five hits and one walk while striking out three to improve to 2-1 in 2024. Del Re went 2 for 3 with a walk in the nightcap, extending her current hitting streak to 11 games.
