PITTSBURGH, Pa. (May 10, 2024) - Falling to No. 15 Carnegie Mellon University for the second straight season, the North Central College women's tennis team lost 5-0 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon.
The Tartans took care of business at No. 3 doubles before winning at No. 2 with an 8-4 win. At the top spot, Abigail Penados and Natalie Bassett battled the No. 18 doubles team in the country, but ultimately fell, 8-7.
After a 30-minute rain delay during singles play, Penados fell to the No. 33 singles player in Division III, Sarah Yang, 6-0, 6-1. CMU secured the win with a victory at No. 3 singles as No. 47 Divya Venkatarama beat Kensington Payne, 6-3, 6-3. Bassett took the first set 6-3 from No. 31 Danna Taylor at No. 2 before the clinch. Nina Patience also won her opening set at No. 4, 6-1 prior to the Tartan win.
North Central ends its season with a 24-7 record, the most wins in program history. The Cardinal claimed their fourth straight College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Championship.
