WAUKESHA, Wis. (May 4, 2024) - Winning the third College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Championship in program history, the North Central College men's tennis team swept doubles play against Carthage College to win 5-4 on Saturday at Jean Kilgour-Trailblazer Tennis Complex.
Daniel Estanislao and Rafael Lessa took home the match's first point with an 8-3 win over Diego Silva and Luca Okino at the No. 3 position. At the top spot, Wyatt Crowell and Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez never trailed and claimed an 8-4 win over Elios Briand and Myles Krzewinski. Finding themselves down 5-1 at the No. 2 fixture, Ramon Vilarroig Martinez and Matthew Sengphommachanh won seven of the final eight points to capture a comeback 8-6 victory, completing the doubles sweep.
Singles action was just as tight with Crowell battling to a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4 to give the Cardinals a 4-0 lead. Carthage responded by winning No. 5, No. 3, No. 2, and No. 6 to even the match at 4-4. Vilarroig Martinez opened the No. 1 spot with a 6-4 win against Francisco Silveira before the Firebird claimed the second set, 7-6. Vilarroig Martinez prevailed in a 6-1 tiebreak set to secure the 2024 CCIW Championship for the Cardinals.
By winning the CCIW Tournament, the Cardinals earned the league's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. The selection show, which will reveal North Central's next opponent and location, is set for 12:30 p.m. (ET) on NCAA.com.
