Sept. 22, 2024 – The North Central College women's soccer team battled the elements to beat the #8 nationally ranked, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in their sixth straight victory at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
North Central (8-2) scored in under sixty seconds into the match for the second game in a row.
Elle Sutter broke free to pass to
Jordan Lange to push an early 1-0 lead. The Cardinal and UW-La Crosse (6-2) offenses continued to hammer each defensive zone firing three times each over the next seventeen minutes.
In the 18th minute,
Madison DeVriendt found a gap to help
Sarah Andrey set an unanswered two-goal lead. North Central did not allow the Eagle defense to breathe long as just five minutes later,
Kassandra Salviola assisted
Gabriella Mattio to her second career goal for the Cardinals.
UW-La Crosse attempted to find an answer to the North Central onslaught but found only five more shooting opportunities over the last twenty-two minutes of the half.
With the score at 3-0 coming out of halftime, the Eagles struggled to keep the ball out of their defensive end, as
Victoria Jaimes forced a save out of Sophia Anger just thirty seconds in. North Central broke through again in the 58th minute as
Yazmin Martinez tallied an assist to help Salviola lift a four-goal lead.
UW-La Crosse put up three shooting attempts over the next twelve minutes until DeVriendt and Salviola found
Brooke Nelson to hammer the fifth goal in. As the teams battled up and down the field, a determined 77th-minute effort from Martinez gave Sutter the final goal of the match to seal the scoring at 6-0.
In total, the Cardinals took more shots on goal with fifteen to the Eagles five. At goal,
Olivia Mattison shut out UW-La Crosse with five saves.
