Third-Ranked Cardinals Fly Into National Duals Semifinals

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (Jan. 10, 2025) - The third-ranked North Central College women's wrestling team defeated the University of Mount Olive and No. 13 Elmira College on day one of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals.
 
North Central faced the University of Mount Olive in the first round. Tenth-ranked Maddie Avila opened the day on the mat in the 103-pound weight class by defeating Lilian Prendergast with a dominating 11-0 technical fall. Leeana Mercado followed up with a technical fall of her own over O'marzia Wright (10-0) in the 110 division. The Cardinals team earned 15 points, with No.10  Mikayla Garcia (117), No. 7 Janessa George (124), and Eliana White-Vega (131) all defeating their opponents with pins. Halfway through the weight classes, North Central led 23-0.
 
In the 138 class, Emma Grimm defeated Angelica Steffy by a 9-0 decision. Seventh-ranked Sydney Perry pinned Kayleigh Savage in just one minute and 26 seconds in the 145 class to give North Central a 31-0 lead. Riley Aamold (160) defeated Savannah Bramhall with a technical fall (11-0) before No. 5 Shenita Lawson (180) followed suit with another 11-0 technical fall for the Cardinals. In the 207 division, No. 10 Dasia Yearby recorded the fastest pin of the dual in just one minute and one second over Andrea Smith. The Cardinals defeated the Trojans 44-0.
 
North Central met No. 13 Elmira College in the quarterfinals. Right away, the Cardinals were up by five points by a one minute and 16 second pin from No. 6 Brianne Graves (103) over Joycedeliz Rodriguez. In a nail-biting match in the 110 division, Mercado defeated No. 8 Abby Duke by a 7-6 decision. The Cardinals earned 15 points from three consecutive matches. Garcia (117) and White-Vega (131) earned their second pins of the day, while No. 7 George (124) accepted a forfeit win for North Central.
 
With a 23-1 lead, No. 9 Taylor Graveman (138) defeated Gabby Bradigan by a 10-0 technical fall, followed by Aamold (145) defeating No. 5 Zoey Lints with a 10-0 technical fall. Perry (160) earned three points for the Cardinals by a decision win over No. 10 Skylah Chakouian (11-4). In the 180 division, No. 3 Brittyn Corbishley recorded the fastest pin of the dual against the Soaring Eagles and the quickest pin of the day for the Cardinals over Hazel Dahlquist in only 21 seconds. Yearby (207) ended the day for the Cardinals with her second pin of the day. Yearby took down Tayana Labady in two minutes and 12 seconds. North Central defeated Elmira with a final score of 44-2.
 
The third-ranked Cardinals begin day two of the NWCA National Duals at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 11, to face off against the second-ranked King University in the semifinals.
