ST. LOUIS, Mo. (Nov. 16, 2025) - The North Central College women's soccer season has come to a close in the second round of the NCAA tournament after falling to the No. 1 Washington University in St. Louis Bears, 5-1, on Saturday, Nov. 16. The Cardinals finish the season 16-6 while WashU advances with a 18-0-2 record.

Much of the first half was a battle in the midfield. North Central received the first corner of the match in the eighth minute, but the Cardinals could not get a clean shot off. Good ball movement by WashU created enough separation for a shot, but sophomore keeper Lily Mattison stopped the point-blank effort to keep it scoreless in the 12th minute.

WashU broke the stalemate in the 38th minute with a shot from the top of the 18-yard box. With under thirty seconds left in the half, the Bears rattled off a trio of shots in the box, all of which were blocked by outstanding efforts from Lauren Richards and Mackenzie Loomis anchoring the back line.

The Bears added another goal in the 54th minute with a crossed shot. Not long after, the Cardinals were awarded a corner kick. After the initial entry was headed away by a Bear defender, Jordan Lange picked up the loose ball and took a shot through the Bears' back line, but the WashU keeper was able to make the stop.

After WashU scored its third goal of the game, Kassandra Salviola drew a yellow card from the Bears' Sophie Viscovich, setting up a free kick for the Cardinals near the 30-yard line. Salviola took the reentry kick, sending it past the Bears' defense, but it was scooped up by the keeper.

WashU managed to put away two more goals in the second half in quick succession to make it a 5-0 game.

With under three minutes to play, the Cardinals intercepted a WashU pass that allowed Lange to take it through the midfield and fire off a shot past the diving goalkeeper to put North Central on the board and break the shutout.

The Cardinals conclude their season in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, the furthest the team has made it in program history, after an exceptional season that saw them sweep the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) regular season and tournament titles with a perfect 8-0 record in conference play while finishing the season 16-6.
