First Half PK Sustains for Cardinals Win Over Calvin

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Sept. 10, 2025) – The North Central College women's soccer team leaves Michigan with a 1-0 win over Calvin University, who was receiving votes in the latest national poll, after junior Madison DeVriendt delivered a fist half penalty kick goal that carried the Cardinals through the victory. North Central advances to 3-2 to start the season while Calvin stands at 3-2 after the loss.

North Central started off hot with Victoria Jaimes taking a pair of shots, the first going wide before the second was blocked just four minutes in. Calvin put a shot on goal in the seventh minute to try and start a four-shot run but sophomore keeper Lily Mattison was ready for the spot on two while relying on the Cardinal back line to block another.

Brooke Nelson and Lucy Burk each put shots on goal but both were saved by the Knight's keeper to keep the match scoreless through the 20th minute.

Lange received a pass in the box but was tripped up by the Knights goalie for the penalty kick opportunity. DeVriendt converted the attempt to put the Cardinals up 1-0 with 18 minutes left in the half.

The two teams traded blocked shots before Kassandra Salviola sent a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar in the 43rd minute, in what would be the last shot of the opening 45 minutes.

Lange opened up the second half with a pair of shots on goal but both were thwarted by the Knights. The Cardinals looked to take advantage of eight Calvin fouls in the second half but North Central was unable to extend its lead.

North Central led the way with five shots on goal to Calvin's four, but it was the Knights that held the advantage in shots at 17-13. The Cardinals also led in corner kick opportunities, 7-5, while limiting their fouls to nine compared to Calvin's 13. Mattison and the Knights' keeper each totaled four saves in the contest as Mattison's season saves total stretches to 18.

The Cardinals are set to host No. 1 Washington University in St. Louis, Friday, Sept. 12, with game time inside Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium set for 7 p.m.
