Cardinals Topple Dominican for 6th Straight Sweep

Sept. 12, 2025 - The North Central College women's volleyball team swept Dominican University in three sets Friday afternoon at Gregory Arena, winning 25-10, 25-13, 25-23 to begin the North Central triangular to extend their winning streak to six matches.

The Cardinals raced out to a 7-0 lead in the opening set behind three kills from Sarah Lezon. An ace from Demi Carpio and a kill from Lauren Benson gave the hosts a double-digit advantage, 13-3. North Central kept its foot on the gas with a 7-2 run down the stretch before a Dominican error secured a 25-10 victory for the Cardinals in set one.

The Cardinals kept the momentum in the second set, jumping to a 7-3 advantage behind aces from Kylie Handosn and Ava Hoff. Dominican trimmed their deficit to one, 9-8, but North Central countered with a 9-2 run, highlighted by kills from Hanson, Hoff, Ashlyn Lomax and Abranet Layne. North Central scored the final four points of set two to claim a 25-13 win.

Three kills from Emma Schaumburg put the Cardinals ahead, 6-4, before the Stars evened the contest at 10-10. Both teams traded points until kills from Layne and Jordan Surber gave the momentum to North Central. Schaumburg's fifth kill of the third set clinched a tight 25-23 victory for the Cardinals to earn the sixth straight sweep for North Central.

For the match, North Central finished with 39 kills, nine service aces and 43 digs. Dominican was limited to 16 kills, three aces and 23 digs. The Cardinals also tallied 37 assists, compared to 15 for the Stars. Benson led North Central with seven kills, while Lezon and Layne each recorded six. Hanson directed the offense with 22 assists, and Carpio anchored the defense with 12 digs. 

The Cardinals wrap up the triangular Saturday with a 4 p.m. match against Rhodes College (Tenn.). These programs have not faced off since 2004.
