Cliff Harris Award Press Release
Jan. 15, 2026 - For the first time in program history, a North Central College football player has won the Cliff Harris Award, as defensive lineman
John Sullivan has been recognized as the nation's top small-college defensive player in NCAA Division III.
Sullivan anchored the Cardinals' defense with one of the most productive seasons in program history. He totaled 73 tackles, eight sacks, 21 quarterback hurries, eight pass breakups, and 22 tackles for loss amounting to 94 yards. His 22 tackles for loss match Ben Hare's 2004 single-season record, and his 39.5 career tackles for loss rank sixth all-time at North Central.
Sullivan was the only defensive player in the nation to earn First Team honors from all four organizations that issued All-America teams. He also collected Defensive Player of the Year accolades from both
D3football.com and the Associated Press. A five-time All-American, he previously earned Second Team recognition from
D3football.com in 2023.
"
John Sullivan had a tremendous season and helped lead the North Central defense as they advanced to the national championship game," said Pro Football Hall of Famer Cliff Harris. "Not only did he put up big numbers, but he also affected the game in so many ways. Taking on double teams, opponents had to game plan around him every week. Congratulations to John, and I'm looking forward to meeting with him soon to celebrate his remarkable season."
Sullivan, the 2025 Cliff Harris Award winner, was selected by the
D3football.com selection committee. He will be invited to the Dallas Cowboys headquarters to accept the award in person from Harris.
