Apr. 11, 2026 - The North Central College baseball team was limited offensively Saturday, dropping both games of a doubleheader at Zimmerman Stadium as Augustana College earned 9-0 and 5-3 victories.
Augustana opened the scoring in game one with a two-out RBI single in the first inning, then added a run in the third on a wild pitch and a single for a 2-0 lead. Cardinal starter Camden Loomis settled in from there, allowing just one hit the rest of his outing, but North Central could not solve Vikings starter Blake Nettleton, who finished with 15 strikeouts.
Caleb Smith reached scoring position in the sixth after a walk and stolen base, and Payton Diaz later singled and advanced to third on a wild pitch and passed ball, but both were stranded. Augustana added four runs in the eighth and two in the ninth to close out the 9-0 decision. Nettleton earned the win with 8.1 innings. Loomis took the loss after five innings with two runs allowed and three strikeouts. Diaz recorded a hit and a walk as North Central totaled five hits.
Both pitchers controlled the early innings of game two as Augustana took a 1-0 lead in the second. The score held until the sixth, when Jackson Bland drew a leadoff walk and Diaz singled to center. A groundout by Caleb Coberley moved both runners into scoring position, and an Augustana error allowed Bland to score and tie the game. Andre Medina followed with a two-out RBI single to give North Central a 2-1 lead.
The Vikings answered immediately with three runs on five hits in the seventh to regain the lead, then added an insurance run in the eighth. In the ninth, Luke Wallace doubled with two outs and scored on a Bland RBI double, but the Cardinals could not extend the inning as Augustana secured the 5-3 win.
Yuhki Yamada and Bland each finished with two hits, while Bland scored and drove in a run. Jonny Rossi took the loss after 6.1 innings with three runs allowed and five strikeouts. Ryan Gerdes worked 1.1 scoreless innings.
Passing the midway point of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin slate, the Cardinals sit at sixth place with a 5-6 mark in league play.
North Central and Augustana conclude the season series Sunday at Swanson Stadium in Moline, Ill., with first pitch at 1 p.m.
