Georgees’ Late Free Kick Lifts North Central to 2-1 Win Over Dominican

RIVER FOREST, Ill. (Sept. 21, 2026) – With the game tied late, freshman Claire Georgees delivered a clutch free kick in the 87th minute to give the North Central College women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Dominican University Monday evening. Georgees scored both goals for the Cardinals, who improve to 7-0 with their seventh straight win, while the Stars fall to 3-2-2. 
 
The Stars struck first in the 15th minute, as Dominican threaded a ball between the Cardinals' backline following a corner kick and found the top corner to take a 1-0 lead. North Central looked to respond quickly off the restart, with Kara Waishwell sending a ball into the middle for Reese Anderson, but the Stars' goalkeeper made a point-blank save to keep the Cardinals off the scoreboard.
 
Quick ball movement in the 41st minute gave North Central a close chance, but Lily Mayer's shot went just wide, leaving the Cardinals trailing 1-0 heading into halftime.
 
The opening half was an evenly matched affair as both teams produced six shots, with the Stars putting three on goal and the Cardinals having two on-target.
 
The Cardinals had the first strong look of the second half when Madison DeVriendt weaved through defenders and took a shot that ultimately deflected off the crossbar.

North Central was granted back-to-back corner kick opportunities in the 63rd minute, with DeVriendt servicing the entry on both attempts. The first was unsuccessful, but the Cardinals were able to win the loose ball in front of the net with Claire Georgees putting it away off the assist from Waishwell for the equalizer. 

In the 87th minute, Tatum Smith drew a crucial foul just outside the box to set up a Cardinal free kick. Georgees lined up just off-center and narrowly found a path around Dominican's four-player wall, sending the ball into the net to give North Central a 2-1 lead.

The Cardinals kept the Stars from reaching their attacking third for the remainder of the contest, securing their seventh straight win of the season. 

North Central finished with a 19-8 advantage in shots, including a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. The Cardinals also held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks, while the Dominican goalkeeper tallied seven saves compared to three for Emma Megerle. 

Georgees scored both of North Central's goals, recording the first two goals of her collegiate career. Waishwell was credited with the assist on the Cardinals' first goal. 

North Central is set to open up College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin play at home on Saturday, Sept. 26, as the Cardinals host Illinois Wesleyan University for an 11 a.m. contest.
