The Merle Chapman Award was established in 1992 to honor the long time Milikin Athletics Director and the second commissioner of the CCIW. Chapman severed as commissioner from 1997-2002. The award identifies the student-athletes, one male and one female from SAAC, from the each of the eight member insitiutions that bes exemplifiy the traits that Chapman displayes and encouraged during his three-plus decades of service as teacher, coach and mentor to the athletes, coaches and administrators of the CCIW. Those traits are loyalty, enthusiasm, and commitment to academics, athletic and personal excellence, leadership and sportsmanship.
