2022 Trine Regional


North Central College qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament as an at-large qualifier after finishing the regular season with a 27-13 record. After finishing as the runner-up in the CCIW Tournament, the Cardinals entered the Trine University Regional as the No. 2 seed in their field. To open tournament play, North Central defeated Penn State Behrend College 5-0 by putting together a four run 5th inning. The Cardinals dropped their next matchup against host Trine when the Thunder broke a 4-4 tie in the 5th and never looked back, winning the game 8-4. With a regional championship berth on the line, the Cardinals bounced back with a shutout victory against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The Cardinals' semi-final victory was highlighted by excellent pitching, with starting pitcher Gianna Corbin delivering two clutch outs with the bases loaded to keep the game scoreless in the 5th inning. Jaime Smith, Talia Torosian, and Breanna Adams all drove in runs that same inning to propel the Cardinals to the championship round with a 3-0 win. In a rematch from the previous day, the Cardinals faced off against the Thunder in the tournament's final game. The Cardinals held the Thunder hitless through the first four innings, leaving the game scoreless heading into the 5th. The Cardinals were on track to pitch another shutout inning in the 5th when a throwing error put runners on second and third for the Thunder. This would position Trine to break the game open, scoring four runs in the 5th and tagging on another two in the 6th. The 6-0 score would remain and the Cardinals fell to the Thunder, ending their season.
