Veteran high school coach Don Sutherland joined the North Central College baseball coaching staff prior to the 2020 season.
Sutherland joins North Central after a distinguished teaching and coaching career at Cary-Grove High School, where he taught mathematics from 1978-2019. He was a member of the football and baseball coaching staffs throughout his tenure at Cary Grove, serving as head baseball coach from 1987-2018 and defensive coordinator for the football program from 1983-2017.
Amassing over 600 career victories as head baseball coach, Sutherland led Cary-Grove to five Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Regional titles, two Sectional titles and was Class 4-A State runner-up in 2009. Sutherland has also served as president of the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association (IHSBCA) and is also a member of the IHSBCA Hall of Fame.
Sutherland played football and baseball at Augustana College from 1974-78, graduating with a bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1978. He earned a master's degree in mathematics from Illinois State University in 1986.
Sutherland and his wife Heidi, have two adult sons, Michael and Matthew '19.
