Matt Helwig '21 joined the North Central College coaching staff prior to the 2023-2024 season as an assistant coach for the men's basketball program.
Helwig appeared in 89 games for the Cardinals from 2019-2023, scoring 1,574 points to rank seventh on North Central's all-time career list. Helwig established a new career program record for free-throw percentage (.890) while sitting fourth in points per game (17.7) and eighth in free throws made. He led the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) in scoring two straight seasons, averaging 24.5 points per game as a junior in 2021-2022 and 21.8 points per contest as a senior in 2022-2023.
Helwig was a two-time First Team All-CCIW selection and earned D3hoops.com Fifth Team All-America honors as a senior. He also led the CCIW in free-throw percentage as a junior and senior, setting the current North Central record of 90.8 percent in 2021-2022.
He holds a bachelor's degree in sport management from North Central and is completing requirements for a master's degree in sports leadership.
