ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (Nov. 15, 2008) - Despite being undermanned, the North Central College men's swimming team managed seven first place finishes in their 570-276 dual meet loss to Augustana College at the Carver P.E. Center.
Tyler Hsieh (Fr., Naperville, Ill./Central) continued his impressive freshman season, accounting for four of the team's seven top finishes.
Hsieh finished first in the 50 yard freestyle, 100 yard free and 100 yard breaststroke races while teaming up with Brian Hummer (Fr., West Chicago, Ill./West Chicago), Quincy Simon (So., Chattanooga, Tenn./McCallie) and Timothy Patula (Fr., Burbank, Ill./Reavis) to claim the 200 yard medley relay win. Hsieh improved his time in the 100 yard free by over three seconds, clocking a team-best time of 49.57. Hsieh swam times of 22.89 and 1:02.56 in the 50 free and 100 breaststroke respectively while the 200 medley relay squad posted a 1:50.43.
Other event winners included Patula who claimed the 200 yard free in 2:00.27, improving his time by over two seconds while Quincy Simon turned in a pair of victories in the 500 and 1,000 yard freestyle races. Simon swam a 5:43.64 in the 500, a team-best while finishing the 1,000 yard free in 11:31.36. Brian Hummer placed second in both the butterfly and the backstroke at the 100 yard distance, turning in times of 1:03.53 and 1:03.53 respectively.
Saturday's meet was the first dual meet of the season for the Cardinals who take the rest of the month off, returning to the pool on Friday, December 5 for the two-day Wheaton College Invitational.
