Pointers hot shooting scorches Cardinals, 89-55

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (Dec. 3, 2008) – 24th ranked UW-Stevens Point led almost wire-to-wire, never trailing in the 89-55 win over North Central College in a non-conference women's basketball game at Berg Gymnasium. Jessica Davis (Jr., Chicago/Whitney Young) and Meghan McGuire (So., Elgin, Ill./Burlington Central) led the way for the Cardinals, each ending the game in double figures.
The Pointers took a 15-point lead into the half, shooting an impressive 60 percent (21-for-35) from the field. UW-Stevens Point took an early lead before a pair of Jessica Davis free throws knotted the game at four apiece. It would be the closest the Cardinals would come all day as the Pointers would build a 55-30 lead after the first 20 minutes of action, outrebounding North Central 22-11.
Stevens Point would maintain a comfortable lead throughout the second half, cruising to the 89-55 win. The Pointers finished the game shooting 59 percent (36-for-61) from the field while limiting the Cardinals to just 34.5 percent (20-for-58). It was the fourth time in as many years that the Pointers have defeated the Cardinals with UW-Stevens Point netted 80 plus points in all four meetings.
Jessica Davis led the Cardinal scoring effort with 13 points while Meghan McGuire chipped in 11, shooting five-for-nine from the floor. Brianne Parra (Sr.,Justice, Ill./Argo) led the team in rebounding with six boards (four offensive) while scoring six points. The Pointers Brittany Petersen led the game in scoring with 22, shooting 11-for-14 from the field while Cassie Bandow and Janelle Van Gomple added 14 and 12 points, respectively. Bandow led the game with eight rebounds while Petersen recorded a game-high four blocks.
With the loss, North Central falls to 3-4 while UW-Stevens Point, ranked 24th in the most recent D3hoops.com poll, improves to 5-1 on the season. The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday, November 9, taking on Robert Morris-Chicago of the NAIA.
