Mar. 14, 2009 - North Central College's 22nd varsity sport is now officially off and running, as the women's lacrosse team made its long-awaited debut in front of a spirited crowd at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
Up against a team with a two-year head start in varsity competition, the Cardinals hung tough early before ultimately succumbing in a 22-2 loss to Adrian College (Mich.)
After falling behind, 2-0, North Central climbed back into contention with the first goal in school history. Amy Frazzini did the honors, finding the back of the net with 22:37 left in the first half.
The Bulldogs (3-2) found their stride after Frazzini's score, carrying a 15-1 lead into halftime and holding a 21-1 advantage when Frazzini broke free for another goal with 2:34 left in the contest.
Goalkeeper Elise Manzie finished with nine saves for the Cardinals, while Frazzini also led the team with five ground balls.
Adrian was led in scoring by Rachel Johnston, who finished with five goals.
North Central will travel to the Pacific Northwest over spring break for three games. The Cardinals will take on Pacific University (Ore.) on Friday, Mar. 20, before traveling to Tacoma, Wash., for a game against Linfield College (Ore.) on Sunday, Mar. 22, and an encounter with the University of Puget Sound (Wash.) on Monday, Mar. 23.
